White or Milky opal is a precious opal; Classified as N9 on the body tone scale. It has a white to pale-grey base and is the most common form of precious opal found. It has the spectacular play of colour this gemstone is renowned for and can display all of the spectral colours. As the opals body tone or base is pale, the colours appear muted compared to black opal, making them overall less valuable.

They are the most plentiful opals found and have been mined from Coober pedy since they were first found there in 1915.
